How to Change Your Driver’s License Name in Florida

If you’ve recently changed your legal name, you may be wondering what the process is to update your driver’s license to reflect that. In the state of Florida, the process of changing your name on your driver’s license is relatively straightforward, though it can take some time to complete. Read on to learn more about how to go about changing your driver’s license name in Florida.

Gather Required Documents

The first step in changing your driver’s license name in Florida is to gather the necessary paperwork. You’ll need a copy of your original birth certificate or passport, as well as proof of your Social Security Number (SSN). Additionally, you’ll need to provide proof of your name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, or adoption papers. If you have legally changed your name but have not yet received the paperwork, you can fill out and submit a Name/Gender Change Affidavit Form in lieu of the proof of name change.

Visit a Driver License Office

Once you’ve gathered the necessary documents, you’ll need to visit a local driver license office. You can find the office nearest to you using the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ online office locator. When you arrive at the office, you’ll need to present your documents and fill out any necessary paperwork. You’ll also need to pay a fee, which is currently $25. Once you’ve completed the process, you will receive a temporary driver’s license, which is valid for up to 30 days. This will allow you to drive legally until your new driver’s license arrives in the mail.

Wait for Your New License

Once you’ve completed the necessary paperwork and paid the fee to the driver license office, you’ll need to simply wait for your new driver’s license to arrive in the mail. This can take up to several weeks, depending on the processing time of the DMV. Your new driver’s license will arrive with your new name and will have the same expiration date as your original license.

Renewal and Replacement

If your driver’s license is expired or close to expiring, you’ll need to renew it rather than simply changing the name on the old one. You’ll need to follow the steps for renewing your license, which includes paying a fee and submitting to a vision test. Likewise, if your driver’s license has been stolen or lost, you’ll need to go through the process of replacing it rather than just changing the name on the original document.
