Driver s License Name Change California
How to Change Your Name on Your California Driver’s License
Overview
If you want to change your name on your California driver’s license, you must first update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA). You will then need to provide the updated documentation to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV will issue a new driver’s license with your updated name. Depending on the type of name change, you may need to provide additional documentation.
Update Your Name with the Social Security Administration
To change your name on your California driver’s license, you must first update your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This can be done either in person or online. You can find the necessary documents and instructions on the SSA website. It is important to note that the name on your Social Security card must match the name on your driver’s license.
Visit the DMV
Once your name has been updated with the SSA, you will need to visit your local DMV office to complete the process. When you arrive, you will need to provide the following documents: your current driver’s license, your Social Security card with your updated name, and two forms of identification. Examples of acceptable forms of identification include a passport, birth certificate, or marriage certificate.
Complete the Application
Once you have provided the necessary documents, you will need to complete an application for a new driver’s license. On the application, you will need to provide your updated name, address, and other personal information. Once the form has been completed, you will need to pay the applicable fee. Fees vary depending on the type of license and the length of validity.
Provide Additional Documentation
Depending on the type of name change, you may need to provide additional documentation. If you are changing your name due to marriage or divorce, you will need to provide a certified copy of the document that shows the legal name change. If you are changing your name for any other reason, you may need to provide a county court order showing the legal name change.
Receive Your New License
Once your application has been processed, you will receive a new driver’s license with your updated name. This process typically takes approximately four to six weeks. If you need to receive your license sooner, you may be able to request an expedited license. Expedited licenses are typically available within two weeks.
