Change Name On Driver s License Nj

How to Change Your Name on a New Jersey Driver’s License

If you’ve recently changed your name and need to update your New Jersey driver’s license, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s a fairly straightforward process. In New Jersey, you can update your driver’s license with your new name either in person at your local Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) or via mail. You must provide evidence of your name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.

In Person at Your Local MVC

If you prefer to update your driver’s license in person, you will need to make an appointment at your local MVC office. To schedule an appointment, call your local MVC office or visit the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission website. You will need to bring the following documents with you to your appointment:

  • Your existing driver’s license
  • Evidence of your name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order
  • Proof of your Social Security number
  • Proof of your New Jersey residency, such as a mortgage or lease statement
  • Two documents that prove your identity, such as a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or permanent resident card

You must also pay a fee to update your driver’s license with your new name. The fee varies depending on the type of license you have.

Via Mail

If you can’t make it to your local MVC office, you can update your driver’s license via mail. You will need to complete the Application for Change/Correction/Replacement form and mail it to the MVC office with the required documents and payment.

  • Your existing driver’s license
  • Evidence of your name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order
  • Proof of your Social Security number
  • Proof of your New Jersey residency, such as a mortgage or lease statement
  • Two documents that prove your identity, such as a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or permanent resident card

The documents must be original or certified copies. You must also include a check or money order for the required fee and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your documents.

What to Expect

Once you’ve submitted your application and all the required documents, you can expect to wait up to two weeks for the MVC to process your request. If you update your driver’s license in person, you will get your new driver’s license on the spot. If you update your driver’s license via mail, you will receive your new license in the mail.

You must update your driver’s license within 60 days of changing your name. If you do not update it within this time period, you may be subject to a fine. If you have questions about the process or need more information, you can contact your local MVC office.
